Three new species of Ichthyophiidae

Indian zoologists from the University of Delhi under the guidance of Professor Biagi (Biju), together with colleagues from the Museum of Natural History (UK) have discovered three new species of Ichthyophiidae (detachment Caecilians or caecilians). Animals were collected in north-eastern India, Manipur and Nagaland. Two new species have a very distinctive stripes, resembling whiskers, located on the upper jaw of amphibians.

As the professor Biagi said, such specific bands in the form of whiskers were first found in limbless amphibians, which are known throughout the world nearly 170 kinds. "We called one of types Ichthyophis moustakiu - "Ichthyophis with a mustache" because it has the most prominent yellow stripe on the upper lip. Another type with small "whiskers" - Ichthyophis sendenyu, and the third type with no mustache - Ichthyophis khumhzi ».

In India Ichthyophis threatened with extinction due to environmental degradation of the environment. In addition, local residents believe they are very dangerous poisonous "snakes" and at every opportunity destroy rare amphibians. In fact Ichthyophis not poisonous and did not even bite. Caecilians eat insect larvae, termites, earthworms, and live from 5 to 20 years. The size of adult animals is approximately 30-35 cm in length.

Ichthyophis extremely difficult to detect because they are the soil fauna. They can be found only by careful digging the soil.
Find all the more valuable because biochemical studies of these animals have shown that they have alkaloids, which could help in the production of valuable antiviral and antibacterial drugs
